The Director General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba reveals his outfit is taking steps to legalize and commercialize the Okada business in Ghana.
He announced plans to register riders in unions and introduce gadgets along with trackers to prevent excessive speeding on our roads just as Rwanda does. He justified that the trip his office took to Rwanda recently was to learn from their ways in road safety so he sees nothing wrong in this.
According to him, the NRSA is also considering categorizing riders based on their specific tasks, such as food delivery or passenger transport. This move aims to ensure that they are registered accordingly and not only for the okada riders but the three wheeled motors as well known as ‘Pragya’ or ‘yellow yellow’.
Speaking on Hot Issues on TV3, Amaliba emphasized that the legalization of the Okada business will come with strict regulations, including the requirement for riders to use E-bikes and wear uniforms and helmets.
The NRSA is also focusing on educating motorists to respect other road users, and plans to increase the number of cameras on roads to monitor and enforce compliance. ‘’After the legalization, No Okada will be allowed to jump traffic’’, he said.
