President John Mahama has visited Ghana’s High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya and interacted with the staff. He is the first Head of State to have visited the Commission since 1960.
Ghana’s High Commissioner to Kenya Damptey Bediako Asare took the President on a guided tour of both the residence and the chancery, showing him the upgraded infrastructure.

The High Commissioner talked about the profound honour of hosting President Mahama, recognizing him as the first sitting President to visit the mission since its establishment in the 1960s. He provided a brief overview of the mission’s history, noting its establishment in the 1960s and its closure in the early 1980s. High Commissioner Asare talked about the mission’s reopening in 2008 and the rehabilitation process that followed, acknowledging the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s efforts in mobilizing resources to restore the facility to its current state. The property was acquired by Ghana’s first President Dr Kwame Nkrumah where the first chancery building was constructed.

In 1980, chancery was closed down. In 2008, government returned to the property and started reconstruction as the structure had decayed. A new residence for the Head of Mission was constructed as well as the Chancery that had few existing structures and had to re-modernized where staff of the High Commission moved in between May and April last year. High Commissioner Asare expressed appreciation to the President for honouring their invitation to tour the newly built facility.

President Mahama expressed joy at the new facility and thanked the staff for their dedication to duty. He was accompanied on the tour by the Acting Spokesperson for the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu and Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Operations, Stan Dogbe.
