Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Assin North erupted in celebration following the Accra High Court’s ruling that acquitted and discharged their Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson, of all criminal charges related to dual citizenship.

Mr. Quayson, who had been entangled in a legal battle since 2021, was cleared on Wednesday, April 9, when the court dismissed the case against him. His acquittal marks the end of a protracted legal ordeal that has had significant implications for both the MP and his constituents.

In a statement issued by Mr. Quayson, Mr. Nicholas Coffie, a member of the NDC’s Assin North Constituency Communication team, described the court’s decision as fair and long overdue.

“We believe justice has prevailed. The decision lifts a heavy burden off Mr. Quayson and allows us to focus on the development agenda for our constituency,” Mr. Coffie said.

The statement further indicated that supporters are hopeful for renewed progress in the area, especially with expectations tied to a ministerial appointment allegedly promised by former President John Dramani Mahama during the 2023 Assin North by-election campaign.

According to the statement, the prolonged legal tussle had adversely affected local development, particularly in critical areas such as road infrastructure. Supporters now see the court’s ruling as a turning point.

“We are optimistic this marks a new chapter for Assin North. The expected ministerial appointment would be a major boost for our community,” the statement added.
