Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, a seasoned lawmaker and lawyer, is set to appear before Ghana’s Parliamentary Appointments Committee today as the President’s nominee for Minister of Education. The Member of Parliament for Tamale South, who has represented his constituency since 2005, is widely recognised for his eloquence, logical reasoning, and pragmatic problem-solving skills.
A Storied Legal and Political Career
Hon. Iddrisu holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Ghana, Legon, and a Barrister-at-Law certificate from the Ghana School of Law. A member of the Ghana Bar Association since 2002, he has built a reputation for his expertise in law and extensive experience in public policy.
Parliamentary Leadership
Elected in December 2004, Mr. Iddrisu has consistently served the people of Tamale South. He was the Minority Leader in Parliament from 2017 to 2023, during which he also sat on the Parliamentary Service Board and chaired its Committee on Administration and Human Resources.
His work has extended beyond Ghana’s borders. As a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) between 2017 and 2020, he co-rapporteur the IPU Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, Finance, and Trade. Earlier, in 2011, he served as Commissioner on the ITU/WHO Commission for Women and Children’s Health.

Hon. Iddrisu’s extensive ministerial portfolio includes:
Minister for Communications (2009–2013): Spearheaded initiatives such as Mobile Number Portability, SIM Card Registration, and the Data Protection Law to boost competition and safeguard privacy in the telecommunications sector.
Minister for Trade and Industry (2013–2014): Advanced trade and industrial development strategies.
Minister for Employment and Labour Relations (2014–2017): Chaired Ghana’s delegation to the International Labour Organisation’s conferences and led key discussions on technical cooperation.
Early Leadership
Mr. Iddrisu’s political journey began as President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) in 1996. Known for his robust leadership during that period, he remains celebrated as one of the union’s most successful leaders.
