Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has warned that under his leadership he will not tolerate any member of parliament who engages in destructive mining activity or galamsey. He said any member who is find to be engaging in or financing the activities of illegal mining will face the full rigors of the law.

According to the speaker, MPs cannot be preaching accountability and integrity to the nation while turning a blind eye to misconduct within its ranks. The speaker of parliament was addressing MPs at the Parliamentarians’ conference on restoring a culture of proper small scale mining in Ghana.
He said as law makers they must lead by example. He said the task is daunting but can be overcome.

The Right Honorable Speaker charged the MPs to have a renewed commitment to the fight against galamsey. He said the galamsey threat is real and has the potential to bring the economy to a halt. He said the fight should not be left to the sector minister or the civil servants at the ministry and agencies under the ministry alone but all must collaborate and contribute to ending to what he called ‘extinctiable’ threat to humanity.
