The Inspector General of Police, Dr. Akufo Dampare says Police Personnel deployed to Assin North are not to intimidate anyone but to ensure the safety and security of the people.
“As we go into the Assin North Bye-Election tomorrow, 27th June, 2023 the Police Service wishes to assure the people of Assin North in particular and Ghanaians in general that adequate security measures have been put in place within the Constituency in order to ensure security, law and order before, during and after the election”, the statement noted.
According to him, not all the officers would be at various polling stations, but would be deployed to some areas the Police deem necessary to ensure a smooth election.
The Police also expressed concern about the pedling of false information.
“However, one concern all the stakeholders want the public to help them address is the circulation of false information on social media. In this regard, we would like to urge the public to be circumspect in their reportage on the election and avoid circulating false information that has the likelihood to cause a breach of peace since the police will take the necessary action against anyone found culpable”, according to the statement.
At a meeting with some Political Party Executives on Monday, June 27, 2023, the IGP entreated the leadership of the parties to cooperate with the Police for a successful by-election on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.
“We wish to urge the people of Assin North constituency to go about their normal activities freely including going out to exercise their civic duty of casting their vote”, it noted.
Meanwhile, Correspondent Kingsley Nana Boadu reports from Assin North that citizens are going about their regular activities in anticipation of today, June 27, 2023 by-election.
