CEO of the Consumer Protection Agency, Kofi Kapito has shared his views on the recent apology rendered by the Minority Leader, in Parliament, Afenyo Markin for calling the Clerk of Parliament, Mrs. Gifty Gobah, a “partisan clerk.”
Speaking on the matter on GTV breakfast on 5th January, 2025 with Thelma Tackie, Mr. Kapito emphasized the importance of focusing on laws and systems rather than assumptions and personal opinions. He acknowledged that everyone has preferences but stressed that professional conduct should be the key measure in such cases.
The Minority Leader initially accused Mrs. Gobah of bias, citing delays in sending notices and reports to the Minority side, particularly regarding the Appointments Committee’s activities. According to him, these delays suggested favoritism toward the ruling party.
However, Kofi Kapito questioned whether such delays were happening for the first time or if they had occurred under previous administrations as well. He argued that Ghana lacks strong systems to handle such issues effectively, unlike countries where institutions function independently.
He cited the United States as an example, where legal and institutional structures prevent leaders from making unilateral decisions. Referring to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s legal challenges, he highlighted how strong systems ensure accountability in governance.
Kapito believes that if Ghana had similarly strong systems, disputes like this would not arise, as procedures would be followed without political interference.
Meanwhile, Parliament has moved forward with key approvals, despite the controversy.
