Former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s recent endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 elections, has sparked controversy in Ghana’s political landscape.
Presidential candidate and the founder of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has publicly criticized Kufuor’s decision, describing it as a potential stain on his respected legacy.
Speaking on Oyerapa radio Station at Kumasi, on Monday, November 18, 2024, Alan Kyerematen, expressed disappointment in his uncle’s public support for Bawumia, stating that it was based on inaccuracies and could harm the high regard many have for him.
“Kufuor is my uncle, and I don’t want to say something publicly against him. But what he has done has created a big blot on his political career,” said
Kufuor’s endorsement came during a meeting with journalists on November 17, 2024, where he commended Bawumia for his economic expertise and leadership abilities. He urged Ghanaians to rally behind Bawumia, claiming his presidency would significantly enhance Ghana’s economic prospects.
However, Kyerematen questioned Kufuor’s motives, suggesting that his endorsement was politically driven and not entirely accurate. He also warned that Kufuor’s involvement in partisan politics at this stage could damage his esteemed reputation.
The controversy surrounding Kufuor’s endorsement highlights the complexities of Ghana’s political landscape ahead of the 2024 elections. As the country navigates its economic challenges, the endorsement has sparked heated debates among Ghanaians, with many questioning the motivations behind Kufuor’s decision.
