The Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, will this morning present the 2021 National Budget Statement on behalf of the Minister of Finance nominee, Ken Ofori-Atta, who is in the US for a post-covid medical review.
The Speaker of Parliament , Alban Bagbin yesterday confirmed this in parliament. Since the departure of the Finance Minister, there have been speculations as to whether Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, a former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana; or Alan Kyeremanten, Minister for Trade and Industry will stand-in for the recuperating Finance Minister.
Others believe the best person to stand in for the Finance Minister is the Majority Leader, who is also Minister for Parliamentary Affairs.
Observers suggest that either of the three presenting the budget would amount to a tacit and veiled endorsement by the executive on who will take over from President Akufo-Addo when his term of office expires in 2025.
The speculations were put to rest by the letter from President Akufo-Addo to the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, which was read to the House on Thursday evening.
