Moses Foh-Amoaning, Executive Secretary of the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) massive loss in the recent elections to the LGBTQ bill. Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show, Foh-Amoaning stated that the bill was a central issue in the elections, which the NPP ultimately lost.
Foh-Amoaning expressed disappointment in former President Akufo-Addo’s refusal to sign the bill, describing it as a “sad commentary on his legacy.” However, he expressed trust in President Mahama to sign the bill, despite his general distrust of politicians. “I don’t think President Mahama will refuse to sign the bill, as that would go against the will of Ghanaians,” he said.
The proposed law, formally known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, aims to introduce widespread restrictions on LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana. The bill received bipartisan support in Parliament and was approved on February 28, 2024. However, it requires presidential assent to become law.
Foh-Amoaning believes that once President Mahama signs the bill, Ghana will receive more resources to address its challenges.
