The Minister-Designate for Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, has reassured Ghanaians that President Mahama’s government has no plans to cancel the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, introduced by the Akufo-Addo administration. Instead, it plans to review and expand the initiative to make it more sustainable and beneficial to Ghanaians.
Haruna Iddrisu clarified this during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 20.
“Let me assure this committee that President John Dramani Mahama has no option to cancel Free SHS,” he said. “Therefore, those who listen to him, even in the cause of his campaign, he has stated that he will expand Free SHS.”
Mr. Iddrisu explained that the review aims to align the policy with Article 25 of the 1992 Constitution and Article 38, which outline the country’s educational policy objectives.
“Chair, the important thing is that he will subject the Free SHS to a review,” he added.
The government also plans to convene a stakeholder forum to gather insights and recommendations on enhancing the education sector.
This move demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving the Free SHS policy and ensuring that it benefits more Ghanaians.
