Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has strongly condemned the military’s brutal treatment of civilians in Bawku Municipality on the night of Tuesday, March 18, 2025.
“The conduct of the military is unacceptable. Soldiers who are responsible for ensuring law and order should never do that,” Ayariga stated.
While acknowledging the regrettable killing of a military personnel by an unknown gunman, the MP who is also the Majority Leader in Parliament, emphasized that the military’s response was equally reprehensible.
“Ransacking and beating innocent civilians and holding the whole town to ransom is equally detested. The rule of law must prevail,” he added.
Ayariga urged the military and Bawku leadership to collaborate on investigating the killing, rather than resorting to violence.
“I regret that the military command did not head my appeal not to react violently to the killing of their colleague and went ahead to do what they did,” the Bawku Lawmaker said.
In a media statement, the MP extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving family of the slain military personnel, acknowledging the profound loss they’ve suffered. He also expressed deep sympathy for the innocent victims of military brutality, emphasizing the need for caution and restraint from all parties involved.
“We need to work together. I have confidence that all sides will repose confidence in His Majesty the Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II to bring finality to the situation in Bawku and end the violence we are experiencing,” Ayariga concluded.
