The Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has addressed the intense scrutiny faced by members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), particularly focusing on ministers-designate Samuel Nartey George and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

In an interview on GTV’s breakfast show with Kafui Dey on February 5, 2025, Ayariga asserted that the criticisms directed at these individuals stem from their vocal opposition to the former NPP government, rather than any substantial concerns regarding their capabilities or qualifications for ministerial roles.

Ayariga stated, “Their main issue with Sam George was some indication that he had said some unpleasant things about the former president,” highlighting the political motivations behind the attacks on these NDC figures. He elaborated that Ablakwa’s challenges were related to his role as chairman of the oral committee rather than any flaws in his policy proposals.

Reflecting on the political landscape, Ayariga noted, “These are two young people that have been in the forefront of the political fight by the NDC to return to power,” indicating that their active involvement makes them targets for opposition scrutiny. He expressed confidence in their abilities, stating, “Everybody agrees that they are good material and nobody doubts their competence”.

Furthermore, Ayariga defended the integrity of the parliamentary vetting process, emphasizing that questions regarding personal finances should be directed to appropriate authorities rather than being a focus during parliamentary sessions. He remarked, “If you think somebody is living above his income… go and report,” reinforcing the idea that privacy should be respected in such matters.
