President John Dramani Mahama has announced key appointments to bolster Ghana’s national security architecture, selecting a team of seasoned professionals to lead critical security agencies and advisory roles. The appointments reflect his administration’s commitment to safeguarding citizens and ensuring national stability amidst evolving security challenges.

Former Chief of Staff Prosper Douglas Bani has been named the National Security Advisor to the President. With a distinguished career in public service, including his tenure as Minister for the Interior, Mr. Bani brings extensive experience and strategic insight to the role. His leadership is expected to provide the government with comprehensive guidance on security policies and coordination.

Joining him is DCOP Abdul-Osman Razak, who will serve as the National Security Coordinator. Known for his strategic acumen and operational expertise, DCOP Razak will ensure seamless collaboration across all security agencies, focusing on creating a cohesive and effective security strategy to address both internal and external threats.

Retired Commissioner of Police Nathan Kofi Boakye has been appointed as the Director of Operations at the Presidency. Renowned for his exemplary service in the Ghana Police Service, COP Boakye’s role will focus on enhancing operational effectiveness and ensuring that security measures align with the President’s vision for a secure Ghana.

Meanwhile, Charles Kipo has been named the Director General of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). With his extensive background in intelligence and security operations, Mr. Kipo will oversee the nation’s intelligence framework, focusing on proactive measures to address emerging threats. His appointment underscores the administration’s emphasis on intelligence-led security.

The appointments come at a time when Ghana faces complex security challenges, including regional instability, organised crime, and cybersecurity threats.

President Mahama’s strategic selection of these individuals signals his determination to build a robust and responsive security apparatus.

In a statement, Acting Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, emphasised the significance of these appointments:

“These decisions reflect President Mahama’s unwavering commitment to enhancing national security and ensuring the safety of all Ghanaians. The new appointees bring unparalleled expertise and experience to their respective roles, positioning Ghana to tackle both immediate and long-term security concerns,” he said.
