The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will meet today, Thursday, March 7, 2024, to settle on who becomes the running mate of Mr. John Dramani Mahama, the party’s flagbearer.

The NDC’s 2024 presidential candidate on February 27, 2014 submitted his choice of a running mate to the party’s leadership for consideration ahead of the 2024 general elections.

According to sources within the party’s hierarchy, the 2020 vice presidential candidate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, seems to be the preferred candidate among the three names Mr Mahama submitted to the party.

Speaking in an interview on Citi News, a deputy General Secretary of the party, Mustapha Gbande, said the preferred candidate who will be announced after the NEC meeting today will be someone with experience, and integrity to complement the party’s flagbearer.

According to him, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also the 2024 presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stripped the Office of the Vice President of every bit of integrity, and thus it currently needs a person of higher integrity and someone with a credible personality to restore hope and trust to that office.

“What is very important is that we are going to put out a running mate that is better than the status quo, a running mate that brings credibility and higher integrity to bear.

In the context of the running mate that we are going to name, credibility is a big idea and agenda for us. The Office of the Vice President has been deprived, and there is a credibility deficit because of the legacy of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” the NDC deputy General Secretary retorted.
