President John Mahama has announced plans to implement a strict code of conduct for all government officials, aimed at promoting accountability, modesty, and responsible leadership.
Speaking at the swearing-in of newly approved ministers at the Jubilee House on Friday, 7 February 2025, Mr Mahama emphasized that his administration would not condone extravagance, arrogance, or the misuse of public resources.
“This government will be defined by modesty and respect for the Ghanaian people. There will be no place for arrogance or ostentatious behavior. The resources at your disposal belong to the citizens who entrusted us with power,” he stated.
He urged officials to adhere to the new guidelines, describing them as essential for ethical governance.
“You must treat this code of conduct as your guiding principle—your reference point before making any decisions,” he added.
To reduce government expenditure, the President has placed a ban on non-essential travel for public officials. He instructed the Chief of Staff to enforce this measure, ensuring that any official travel is approved by his office and conducted with frugality.
“There will be no first-class air travel. Additionally, all signs of excessive luxury and extravagant lifestyles must be avoided,” he warned.
Reaffirming his commitment to tackling corruption, Mr Mahama stated that the forthcoming code of conduct would provide clear directives on ethical behavior within government.
He also disclosed that he is expecting the final report from the committee overseeing Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) on 10 February.
