Former President John Dramani Mahama has ended his flagbearership campaign tour of all 275 constituencies in the country with a call on president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to disband all militant groups.
Addressing his final meeting with delegates of the National Democratic Congress, (NDC) at
Drobo in the Jaman South constituency in the Bono-Ahafo Region, Mr. Mahama said Nana
Akufo-Addo owes a duty as president to disband militias affiliated to the two political parties.
He said despite all political parties having macho men for the purposes of providing intra-party security, Nana Akufo-Addo is responsible for the introduction of militia groups in the country, adding that the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with the president then as opposition leader, brought foreigners into the country to train NPP thugs.
The former president alleged that the government is putting resources of the state at the disposal of its groups and other political parties are beginning to formulate a response.
Mr. Mahama however, pointed out that the NDC is committed to peaceful elections and will therefore not do anything to threaten nor breach the security of the state.
He also said the NDC has confidence in the state security agencies to provide security at its
upcoming presidential primaries and will therefore not deploy any organised party security
group for that purpose.

In a separate development, a former Deputy Sports Minister and a stalwart of NDC in Ashanti, Joseph Yamin has admitted knowing intimately, the party’s militias declared wanted by the Police in connection with last Monday’s shooting at the premises of the NDC’s Ashanti Regional Office at Amakom.

Speaking to GBC’s Correspondent, Nicholas Osei-Wusu in Kumasi, Mr. Yamin, confirmed the suspects are all members of the militia group, ‘the Hawks’, said to be aligned to the NDC but quickly added that he does not control the group or the individual members.
