Government will soon set up a body to look into the issue of taxation of churches.
This proposal came up at the Presidents meeting with the clergy Wednesday. The meeting become necessary due to the loud public outcry over plans to evict some judges from their homes to make way for the construction of the 5,000 seater capacity cathedral.
Speaking on GBC’s “Behind the News”, the General Secretary of the National Association of Charismatic Churches, Bishop Titi Offei, said the clergy has no issue with churches being taxed but there is the need to qualify it as to how that tax will be paid.
Bishop Ofei commended government’s desire to partner with the church in this regard.
A Tax Policy Analyst, Bernard Anaba, noted that setting up a regulatory body to look into the taxation of churches is a step in the right direction.
Spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Shiek Aremeyaw Shuaib says Muslims do not have any problem with government building the national cathedral.
“The prominence given to Ghana as a Christian country is not true since it is a secular one, adding that government must not give prominence to any religion,” he said on GBC’s “Behind the News”.
