The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, Peter Kwakye-Ackah, has announced the withdrawal of his independent candidacy for the upcoming 2024 elections in a recent development.
“I would like to thank the Elders of the party and other leading members of the party for their invaluable counsel that has led to this decision in the supreme interest of the party,” part of the statement read.
In his statement, Mr. Kwakye-Ackah cited the clearance of NDC candidate Joana Cudjoe by the Sekondi High Court to participate in the election on December 7 as the reason for his decision. With just 18 days remaining until the election, the incumbent MP deemed running as an independent candidate unfeasible following the court’s decision.
Moreover, this move comes after another independent candidate, Dr. Karl Mark Arhin, also opted to withdraw from the race to lend support to Madam Cudjoe.
Furthermore, Dr. Arhin clarified during a rally in Kyeikrom on November 16, where he was joined by NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, that his independent candidacy was a temporary measure to ensure the NDC’s representation in the election amidst the legal challenges faced by Joana Cudjoe.
