Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, has expressed strong opposition to the establishment of a training center for Kayayei in Madina, Accra.
According to him, he does not see the need for it. ‘’I am strongly against promoting Kayayei in Accra because we need our girls at home,’’ he said.
Speaking at an exclusive interview with Maltiti Sadick, the Minister recounted his vetting process when he was asked by the committee if he was aware of the center put up by Bawumia, to which he stated his distaste for the agenda.
Hon. Adolf John further stated that promoting such a center in Accra would only encourage more Kayayei to migrate to the city, thinking they have a place in Accra.
He again emphasized the need to provide training and skills development for these girls in their hometowns, rather than in urban areas like Accra. He mentioned that the government would cover the costs of training and provide necessary equipment to support their development.
The Regional Minister drew from his personal experience, sharing that he had worked menial jobs while in technical school to support himself. According to him, he also engaged his peers to join him, and it led to them being able to pay their school fees without asking their parents.
‘’I even gathered the boys and we worked so some of them were even able to pay their school fees to the point that when they go home to visit their parents, they tell them they’re not coming for money because their fees has already been paid they were only paying their parents a visit’’, he said.
His comments fall on the back of the former Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who inaugurated the Kayayei Empowerment Training Centre on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at Madina in Accra.
