NDC National Chair granted police enquiry bail over kidnapping allegations

The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo who was picked by the police Tuesday, June 11, over allegations of having a hand in recent kidnappings in Ghana has been granted a police enquiry bail.

He was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Accra and was sent to his house for a search as part of police investigations.

According to the police, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is “investigating various acts of kidnapping and causing unlawful damage in which credible and actionable intelligence makes Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo a suspect.”

A statement signed and issued by the Public Relations Officer of the CID, DSP Juliana Obeng, on Tuesday evening said the CID obtained an arrest and search warrant following Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo’s refusal to cooperate with the CID in the ongoing investigations.

“On 11th June, 2019 at about 15:00hrs, the CID executed the said warrant by arresting Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo at No.3 Church Street  Labone, Accra,” the police statement said.

Earlier, the in a statement signed and issued by its General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah urged supporters to remain calm following the arrest of Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo.

HOLDING STATEMENT ON THE ARREST OF OUR NATIONAL CHAIRMAN

The rank and file of our party as well as the generally public is informed that our national Chairman, Hon. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, on Tuesday afternoon tendered himself in to Police following an arrest warrant produced by the police.

Consequently, the Police have proceeded to search the home of Mr. Ofosu- Ampofo.

The full complement of the Party’s legal team is in touch with the Police and is closely monitoring the situation. A team of senior party officials is also currently on standby at the Police Headquarters to attend to the situation.

NDC members, supporters and the generally public are urged to remain calm and await information on any course of action the Party deems fit in the circumstances.
