The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged the government to as a matter of urgency cut its expenditure, rather than overburdening Ghanaians with new taxes. According to the main Opposition party, the government’s revenue projection of GH₵100.5 billion as against its expenditure of GH₵137 billion is worrying.
Speaking at a Public Forum on the 2022 Budget in Accra, Ranking Member on the Finance Committee of Parliament, Isaac Adongo said the Akufo-Addo led Administration’s plans to borrow GH₵ 37 billion to fund its expenses must be looked at critically, as the country’s debt keeps escalating.
He said managing the economy is not just about growth, but putting in place measures that will protect it from different types of future shocks that may confront it.
Mr. Adongo noted that the revenue measures stated in the 2022 Budget, including the E-levy, is an indication of government’s insensitivity to the plight of Ghanaians.
With regards to the reversal of the Benchmark Value Policy, Mr. Adongo described the government’s decision as unfair to traders.
