The National Identification Authority , NIA has challenged allegations by the NDC that it is conspiring with the Electoral Commission to rig the 2020 General Elections for the NPP. In a statement, the NIA stated categorically that it is not part of the Election Management Architecture in Ghana and cannot in any way rig elections.
The NDC at a news conference in a Friday, said activities of the NIA and the Electoral Commission ahead of the 2020 polls were all geared towards rigging the elections. The National Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, for instance alleged that the NIA prioritized the Ashanti Region and Eastern Region, deemed strongholds of the NPP during its registration exercise.
He said the NIA deployed a number of its equipment to the region in a bid to capture more people so the NPP could get more voters to be captured onto the new Electoral Roll. But in a statement and a subsequent news conference addressed by the CEO of the NIA, Prof Ken Attafuah , the Authority said its Board is made up of distinguished persons who will not compromise their reputation in any way by rigging elections. He challenged the NDC and persons who have evidence of such plot to provide them and report to the appropriate authority for action.
On the issue of the Authority’s refusal to use the voters ID card for the Ghana Card registration, Prof Attafuah questioned why the NDC will raise such an issue when its members supported NIA Bill in Parliament.
