The Minister-Designate for the Oti Region, John Kwadwo Gyapong, has pledged to prioritize dialogue to address the ongoing conflict in Nkwanta, which has led to loss of lives and displacement of residents.
The clashes, which began on January 16, have claimed three lives and injured several people. Videos shared by Citi News revealed gunfire and significant property damage. The violence, reportedly tribal in nature, involves the Challa and Adele groups on one side and the Achodes on the other.
The unrest has displaced around 200 residents, who have fled to neighboring areas like Pampawie, Ahamansu, and Kadjebi for safety.
Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee, Mr. Gyapong highlighted his commitment to peaceful solutions. “If approved, I will engage the regional coordinating council, security council, chiefs, and stakeholders in Nkwanta to work towards resolving this issue,” he stated.
He stressed that conflict resolution is a gradual process requiring consistent dialogue and trust-building. He plans to form a committee to bring together all parties involved and promote lasting peace.
Mr. Gyapong’s approach reflects his belief that sustainable peace can only be achieved through collaboration and understanding among all stakeholders.
