Murtala Muhammed regarding the ongoing fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in Ghana. The discussion, held on February 19, 2025, highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing the issue, particularly under President Mahama’s administration.
Hon. Murtala criticized the previous government’s inaction, stating that despite claims of tackling galamsey, security forces were withdrawn from critical mining areas in 2022. He emphasized that the current administration is determined to combat illegal mining effectively. “Whoever is engaged in gallantry activities, will not be spared,” he warned, reiterating that this includes ministers and members of parliament.

The minister acknowledged the complexities of the issue, noting that merely deploying security is insufficient. Instead, he outlined a multifaceted approach involving intelligence gathering and stakeholder engagement with traditional leaders and local communities. He assured viewers that significant changes would be visible within months as the government intensifies its efforts against illegal mining.
He concluded by stressing the need for a comprehensive strategy to ensure lasting solutions to the challenges posed by galamsey, which has severely impacted Ghana’s environment and water resources.
