The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially transitioned to a minority status in Parliament. This shift follows a pivotal decision by the Speaker of the House, who declared four parliamentary seats vacant.

The decision came after four Members of Parliament announced their intention to run as independent candidates in the upcoming 2024 General Elections, thereby vacating their current party affiliations.

The Speaker’s declaration has left the New Patriotic NPP with 135 seats, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds a slender lead with 136 seats. The absence of any independent members in the current parliamentary composition underscores the newfound balance of power.

This development has not only reshaped the numerical composition of Parliament but has also raised questions about party loyalty and political strategy. The decision by the four MPs to pursue independent candidacies suggests a growing trend of individualism within the political sphere, challenging traditional party lines.

As the 2024 General Elections approach, the political climate is expected to become increasingly dynamic. The NPP’s transition to a minority status may influence its campaign strategies and policy priorities, as it seeks to regain its footing.

Meanwhile, the NDC, now holding a slight majority, may find itself in a position to push forward its legislative agenda with greater confidence.
