The New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament has expressed alarm over reports of alleged attacks on workers at the Tema Port by individuals it claims are supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Deputy Majority Leader Patricia Appiagyei described the incidents as part of a broader wave of “thuggery, violence, and looting” allegedly orchestrated by NDC loyalists since the party’s electoral victory.
Appiagyei highlighted video evidence purportedly showing NDC supporters storming the Tema Port in an attempt to seize control of its management. According to her, the group demanded that President-elect John Dramani Mahama replace workers perceived to be non-NDC members with party loyalists.
“Their demands are as outrageous as they are unlawful,” she said. “This undermines the professionalism and neutrality of public institutions and sets a dangerous precedent for partisan control of state resources.”
The Deputy Majority Leader also alleged that similar incidents had occurred in Koforidua, where NDC supporters reportedly locked up the offices of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) manager and besieged the premises of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the National Service Scheme (NSS).
Appiagyei criticised these actions, calling them “lawlessness masquerading as political activism.” She added, “This is not governance. This is not democracy. These acts of violence and intimidation threaten to erode our democratic values and undermine the rule of law.”
The NPP caucus has called on authorities to address the alleged incidents and ensure that public institutions remain neutral and free from partisan interference.
