The National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Council (NC) of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) are scheduled to convene today, December 6, 2023, to deliberate on a potential running mate for their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president of Ghana, won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary, setting him up for a showdown with former president and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 general election.

The primary agenda of the meeting is to identify individuals whom the party deems suitable to partner effectively with Dr. Bawumia, contributing to a successful outcome in the 2024 election.

Sources indicate that notable figures such as Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Energy Minister), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (Education Minister), and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Majority Leader) are being strongly considered for the role.

The NEC is anticipated to engage in thorough discussions about these potential candidates and subsequently present its formal recommendation to the National Council for approval.

This process aligns with the NPP’s constitution, which mandates the selection of a running mate 12 months before a significant election in cases where the President is not the designated candidate
