There are calls for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reduce the filing and nomination fees after the party announced GH¢220,000 cedis as fees that aspiring presidential candidates.
The cost for nomination form for Parliamentary Aspirants is GH¢2,000 and pay a non-refundable filing fee of GH¢20,000.
Aspiring MPs will pay an additional GH¢30,000 as development fees.
The amount charged for the aspiring presidential candidates has seen more than a 100 percent increase from the GH¢85,000 charged in the previous election, feulling concerns about the rising cost of elections in the country.
In an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana, a Lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Dr Alidu Seidu says the NPP must reduce the amount charged as it will discourage qualified persons from contesting.
He suggested a GH¢100,000.
Dr Seidu suggested there should be ceiling on the amounts spent by candidates and political parties in elections to check the increasing monetization of politics.
