In a riveting interview on GTV Breakfast, Thelma Tackie engaged Dr. Jebuntie Zaato, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana’s political science department, on the potential selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh as the vice-presidential candidate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). With Ghana’s elections slated for December 7, 2024, the political landscape is heating up, and this possible nomination has stirred significant debate.
Dr. Zaato provided an in-depth analysis, highlighting the various strengths and challenges associated with Opoku-Prempeh’s potential candidacy. He remarked, “There is something called plausible probability, and this could be the NPP testing the waters.”
According to Dr. Zaato, Opoku-Prempeh, often referred to as NAPO, brings substantial political experience to the ticket. His tenure as the Energy Minister, MP for Manhyia South, and former Education Minister showcases his extensive legislative and managerial capabilities.
Dr. Zaato emphasized NAPO’s political acumen, stating, “Opoku-Prempeh has policy experience as a minister,” and noted his legislative experience, which contrasts with Dr. Bawumia’s lack of experience as an MP. He added, “NAPO brings on experience of working in the Education Ministry, with the implementation of Free SHS.” This experience could be a significant advantage, especially considering his role in one of the NPP’s flagship policies.
However, Dr. Zaato also pointed out potential hurdles. He mentioned, “Opoku-Prempeh presided over dumsor, so he will have to address that,” referring to the electricity supply challenges during his tenure. Additionally, NAPO’s marital status was cited as a possible issue that might be scrutinized during the campaign.
The discussion further delved into the strategic implications of this selection. “Opoku-Prempeh is a pure party man and that is an advantage,” said Dr. Zaato, indicating his strong alignment with the party’s core values and support base. He also highlighted the geographical significance, “All roads to the Jubilee House pass through Ashanti Region,” suggesting that NAPO could energize votes from this critical region.
In comparing NAPO to his potential opponent, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Zaato was clear: “Opoku-Prempeh trumps Opoku-Agyemang on legislative, managerial and political experience.” He further asserted, “In a head-to-head comparison over Education Ministry achievements, Opoku-Prempeh will come out tops.”
Dr. Zaato concluded with a poignant remark on the qualities of a vice-presidential candidate: “The vice-presidential candidate should do no harm to the campaign.” Whether Opoku-Prempeh’s selection is a strategic move to consolidate the NPP’s strengths or a desperate gamble to sway undecided voters remains to be seen.
The interview has undoubtedly set the stage for an exciting and contentious election season.
