Over 1,206 delegates are expected to cast their votes in the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary elections at Awutu Senya East constituency today, Saturday, October 19, 2019.

The Awutu Senya East constituency was part of the 23 constituencies across the country barred from holding primaries when the party organized its national parliamentary primaries in August 2019.

There were reports of some misunderstanding in the constituency for which reason the Central Regional Director of elections of the NDC, Mrs. Gloria Koomson said in an earlier interview that “the party felt it was not safe to organise the elections” in that constituency.

But the Constituency Secretary for the NDC in Awutu Senya East, Ahmadu Tauriq told CNR that the party is now ready to hold the polls to choose the best candidate to represent it in the 2020 parliamentary elections.

In terms of operation, everything is on course. The police is ready. Everything will be in order and it will be successful. There is no party security, what we have is the police who are going to provide security on the grounds,” he said.

The aspiring parliamentary candidates contesting in the elections are Alex Aboge, Kanga Kesse [Esq], Daniel Kojo Awer, Haruna Tetteh, Perez Laryea and Naa Koryor who is the only woman amongst them.

The aspirant who wins will have to battle it out with the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson who is also the Minister for Special Development Initiatives in the 2020 general elections.

Some party supporters who spoke to CNR said Naa Koryor, the only female among the seven candidates is the right person to wrestle power from the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

They lament that the Awutu Senya East NDC have had male candidates for years adding that the time has come to try a female candidate.

We have had male candidates for years and it is about time we look elsewhere for a female candidate who will wrestle power from the NPP,” some of the supporters said.

Lawyer Kanga Kesse is another candidate who analysts say has the potential to pull a surprise.

Constituency Secretary for the NDC in Awutu Senya East, Ahmadu Tauriq said the party will fully support any candidate who will emerge winner of the elections.

He was optimistic that the elections would not be marred by violence.

We are using police personnel for the elections so we are sure of safety,” he added.
