Ghana’s 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic will be officially dissolved on Monday, January 6, 2025, making way for the inauguration of the 9th Parliament at midnight. The event marks the end of the legislative term that began on January 7, 2021, and highlights a significant moment in Ghana’s democratic journey.
The dissolution ceremony will take place during a final sitting chaired by the Speaker of Parliament, the Right Honourable Alban Bagbin. Members of Parliament will use the occasion to conclude outstanding legislative business and bid farewell to their roles, reflecting on their contributions over the past four years.
The 8th Parliament was one of the most closely contested in Ghana’s history, with an equal distribution of 137 seats each between the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), alongside one Independent Member of Parliament. This rare balance of power often led to intense debates and required careful negotiations to pass critical legislation.
Despite its challenges, the outgoing Parliament achieved notable milestones, shaping key policies and addressing pressing national issues.
At midnight, newly elected Members of Parliament will be sworn in, officially inaugurating the 9th Parliament. Among their first duties will be electing a Speaker and two deputy Speakers to steer the legislative agenda for the new term.
The inauguration sets the stage for Ghana’s continued democratic governance and the pursuit of policies aimed at national development.
