International Relations Expert, Dr. Vladimir Antwi-Danso, has asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to strengthen the process of giving Diplomatic and Service passports to selected individuals.
His comments come after public reactions to a directive from President John Dramani Mahama. The directive asked for the recall of diplomatic and service passports issued under the previous Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration. This decision aims to protect Ghana’s travel documents and maintain the country’s diplomatic reputation.
But speaking to Citi News, Dr. Antwi-Danso said the process of issuing such passports must be stricter to avoid misuse and maintain credibility.
“The process should be made tougher. Diplomatic passports are for people serving the state, and their work must benefit the country. But here, it often depends on connections or favoritism,” he said.
He added that misuse of diplomatic passports can harm Ghana’s image in other countries. “If someone with a diplomatic passport behaves badly, it creates big problems between Ghana and the host country. That’s why we need strict criteria for issuing them.”
