Despite efforts to clamp down on this phenomenon, it still poses a danger to the country’s peace and stability in the lead-up to the general election.
The Regional Coordinator for Research and Capacity Development at the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), Dr. Festus Aubyn, emphasized this point while speaking at the GJA/US Embassy Ghana Election 2024 Project.
This initiative aims to help journalists to promote peaceful elections.
Dr. Aubyn stressed the need for a concerted effort to completely disband political vigilantism to prevent any recurrence during this year’s election.
He also highlighted other potential threats, including: Unresolved local conflicts, such as the one in Bawku, which could tarnish Ghana’s electoral reputation and plunge the country into chaos, the proliferation of unregistered guns, ethnoreligious issues, and the spread of electoral extremism and violence at neighboring countries.
Dr. Aubyn urged all stakeholders to engage in continuous dialogue and seek pragmatic solutions to these issues before December to prevent any disruption to the election.
