Independent parliamentary candidate for the Madina constituency, Awal Mohammed, has been discharged by the Adentan Circuit Court after the police withdrew their case against him.
Mohammed was arrested and charged with offensive conduct related to breaches of peace following a complaint by Abdul Razak Hussein, Madina constituency secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He faced charges of offensive conduct related to breaches of the peace but pleaded not guilty before the presiding judge, Mrs. Sedinam Awo Kwadam.
Mohammed had allegedly featured himself alongside NDC presidential candidate John Mahama on campaign posters, sparking concerns among party members, especially the youth, that this could disrupt peace in the area.
The court heard that Mohammed, a former member of the NDC, chose to submit a nomination form as an independent candidate when the Electoral Commission opened applications for parliamentary candidates.
Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, the prosecutor, informed the court that both Mohammed and Hussein are residents of the Madina constituency.
Mohammed had pleaded not guilty to the charges before Judge Mrs. Sedinam Awo Kwadam.
The case was withdrawn, and Mohammed was discharged, bringing an end to the controversy surrounding his campaign posters.
