Polls have opened in Ghana’s District Level Elections, where 38,315 polling stations in all districts, except Nkoranza North and South, are electing District Assembly and Unite Committee Members to ensure governance at the local level.
Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean Mensa, said at a media briefing in Accra that the Commission is hoping for a higher turnout of voters as compared to 2019.
She said winners of the two elections will be declared immediately at the polling stations before the official declaration later on. Also, voters with missing ID cards are encouraged to go and vote.
District and Unit Committee elections are carried out every four years, as stipulated in the 1992 constitution. The supervising body, the Electoral Commission, said it is ready as every material, including personnel required for a smooth exercise, has been procured and distributed.
Mrs Mensa maintained that the EC has done a lot of work by educating Ghanaians on the voting process, which is the work of the NCCE. This is because the commission wants eligible voters to patronise the district-level elections, which usually have low turnout.
17,474 males and 1,106 females are contesting for Assembly Member positions.
Voting concludes at 5 p.m.
