President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in the Constitution Review Committee, tasking them with refining Ghana’s governance structures and shaping the country’s future.
During the ceremony on Thursday, January 30, 2025, President Mahama emphasized the importance of constitutional reform, stating, “The call for constitutional reform is not an admission of failure, but an acknowledgement of progress, a recognition that our democracy must be dynamic, responsive, and ever attuned to the needs of our people.”
President Mahama highlighted the need for Ghana’s constitution to evolve, citing Former Chief Justice Sowa’s description of the constitution as a “living organism”.
He also acknowledged previous efforts to refine the constitution, including the establishment of the Constitutional Review Commission in 2010 and the Constitution Review Consultative Committee in 2023.
The President charged the committee with carefully examining past recommendations, identifying necessary changes, and creating a clear roadmap for meaningful constitutional amendments. He cautioned that this process must not become another unfulfilled reform effort, but rather a turning point for Ghana.
“I understand the weight of responsibility that comes with this task, and I assure you that your work will not be in vain,” Mahama assured the committee.
The swearing-in of the Constitution Review Committee marks a significant step towards refining Ghana’s governance structures and shaping the country’s future.
