The Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has described the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s proposed 24-hour economy as a game-changing policy aimed at enhancing productivity, generating employment, and improving the livelihoods of Ghanaian workers.
Speaking during his parliamentary vetting on Thursday, January 30, 2025, Mr Pelpuo outlined his vision for the initiative, emphasizing its potential to address youth unemployment and improve wages.
The 24-hour economy, championed by President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC, seeks to extend business operations beyond the traditional 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. work schedule. The policy proposes a three-shift system across various sectors to enable continuous economic activity throughout the day and night.
The Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, highlighted that the policy is not just about increasing working hours but also about ensuring fair wages and optimizing labour efficiency.
“This policy, introduced by President John Dramani Mahama, is a commitment to fully engage Ghanaian workers and enhance the existing 24-hour work system,” he stated.
“The goal is to boost productivity within the workforce while ensuring that workers receive fair compensation for their contributions.”
