The Minister-designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has pledged his support for improving the conditions of national service personnel in Ghana.

During his vetting on Thursday January 30, 2025, he was asked about his plans to make the National Service Scheme (NSS) more attractive, especially in terms of allowances and job opportunities.

In response, Pelpuo clarified that the scheme does not fall directly under his ministry but assured that he would support efforts to enhance the welfare of national service personnel.

“I wish the National Service Scheme was under my direct care, but it is not. However, my overall duty is to ensure that Ghanaian workers are properly engaged,” he said.

He cited Article 24(1) of the Constitution, which mandates the government to provide fair working conditions, including safety and health.

“On that basis, I will support any move to increase the allowance of national service personnel and improve their conditions,” he added.

National service personnel across Ghana have long called for better pay and improved job placements. Many will be watching closely to see how the new minister will advocate for their welfare once confirmed.
