The Leader of the NPP Caucus in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has articulated discontent with Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin’s recent actions regarding the vacant seat controversy.
On Thursday, November 7, 2024, Speaker Bagbin adjourned the House indefinitely for the second time due to the absence of NPP MPs in the Chamber.
Addressing Parliament after the adjournment, Afenyo-Markin condemned the NDC for occupying the Majority side of the House, citing the Supreme Court’s ruling on the stay of execution of Bagbin’s declaration as grounds for the NDC MPs to vacate the majority seats. Afenyo-Markin accused the Speaker’s actions of contributing to the “chaos and confusion” caused by the NDC.
Moreover, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of upholding democratic principles. He explained their decision to show respect for the Speaker by refraining from entering the chamber, citing a commitment to the rule of law.
Furthermore, he expressed an unwillingness to engage in what they referred to as a chaotic environment created by the Speaker and the NDC caucus, he highlighted their intention to bring parliament back into session.
Additionally, he asserted their stance against allowing the Speaker to dictate parliamentary affairs, emphasizing that his role does not grant him authority to determine parliamentary business.
