The National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah says though the party is in full support of the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), it believes the referendum should be on whether political parties should sponsor candidates for the District level elections.
Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana on the sidelines of a forum to sensitize people to the upcoming referendum to amend Article 55(3) of the Constitution, he believes the on-going local government reforms is a ploy to eliminate smaller parties.
Meanwhile, an educationist with the Fian Junior High School in the Upper East Region, Jonas Anbazu has called for a total ‘yes’ vote in the referendum.
This is because the devolution of power to the grassroots will not be purposeful if District Chief Executives are not elected.
He lauded the local government reforms saying they are in line with efforts to enhance decentralisation in the country.
Mr. Anbazu called for extensive stakeholder consultation to make the whole exercise a massive success.
