The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has said it has noted with great concern the recent political developments which occurred in Conakry, Guinea.

In a communique signed by President Akufo-Addo, the Chairman of ECOWAS, condemned “with the greatest firmness this coup attempt on Sunday, September 5, 2021’’.

ECOWAS said it demands respect for the physical integrity of the President of the Republic, Professor Alpha Condé and his immediate and unconditional release as well as that of all the personalities arrested.

It also demanded the return to constitutional order or face the pain of sanctions. ECOWAS reaffirmed its disapproval of any unconstitutional political change.

The Statement asked the Guinean Defense and Security forces to remain in a constitutional posture and express its solidarity with the Guinean people and their government.

Soldiers on Sunday, September 8, 2021 appeared on national TV in Guinea claiming to have dissolved the government of President Alpha Condé.

The Defence Ministry has rebutted claims of attempted takeover, and said it had been thwarted by the Presidential Guard.

Meanwhile, citizens were seen in the streets in jubilation, over what some analysts have described as a populist uprising.
