Finance Minister Designate, Dr. Ato Forson, has addressed questions about reintroducing road tolls as part of efforts to generate revenue, reaffirming the NDC’s commitment to this policy as a way to fund road maintenance.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointment Committee, Dr. Forson explained that a previous government had removed road tolls but hinted at their return before leaving office.
“The former government tried to centralise toll collections but faced challenges and later indicated the tolls might return. From day one, the NDC has been clear that road tolls would come back,” he said during his vetting on Monday, January 13, 2025.
He emphasised that the NDC has always been transparent about its plans and committed to fulfilling its promises. He referred to former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu’s statement confirming the party’s position on the issue.
“Road tolls are a common practice worldwide. If you use the road, you contribute to its maintenance. Ghana will not be the first or last country to do this,” Dr. Forson stated. He stressed the importance of collecting tolls efficiently to ensure the revenue directly supports road upkeep.
The Majority Leader also assured the committee that the policy would be implemented effectively and benefit all Ghanaians by improving the country’s road infrastructure.
