The Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, says that 30 out of 31 members of the Council of State believe there is sufficient basis to investigate Ghana’s Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking on Joy FM, Mr. Gyamfi said the Council of State agreed that a “prima facie case” has been established against the Chief Justice, meaning there is enough evidence to begin a formal investigation.
Justice Torkornoo was recently suspended following the submission of petitions accusing her of misconduct. The details of the allegations have not yet been made public.
Mr. Gyamfi emphasised that the strong backing from Council members demonstrates the seriousness of the issue. He added, “Nobody can say all 30 members are NDC members who dislike the Chief Justice.”
The Presidency has not yet released an official response, and the Chief Justice herself has not commented publicly on the matter.
The case is gaining nationwide attention, with many calling for transparency and fairness as the investigation unfolds. It has also sparked debate on how Ghana holds top officials accountable while safeguarding the independence of the judiciary.
