The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has denied claims that he is treating Members of Parliament (MPs) like students. This follows his recent decision to suspend four MPs for misconduct.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Speaker Bagbin rejected the suggestion that he was acting like a headmaster. However, he emphasized the importance of discipline and leadership in the House.
“Some members have referred to me as a headmaster treating Honourable Members like students. I reject that assertion,” he stated.
He added, “Where there are students, there must be a headmaster. If you don’t have a headmaster, you know what is going to happen to the school.”
The Speaker reminded MPs that their role comes with great responsibility. “To whom much is given, much is expected. You are not called Honourable for nothing. The public expects a lot from you. And don’t forget that there is life after Parliament,” he cautioned.
His comments come amid debates over the suspension of four MPs. While some believe the move was necessary to maintain order, others argue it undermines democracy.
However, leaders of the House pleaded with the Speaker to reconsider his decision, stating that the suspended MPs were remorseful. After hearing their appeal, Speaker Bagbin lifted the suspension.
