Voting is underway in today’s early voting for accredited registered voters in the Ashanti region ahead of the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
A total of 20,468 persons have been accredited to exercise their franchise in today’s exercise in the region at 52 designated Poling Centres.
Ashanti region has the highest number of 47 Constituencies in Ghana but some of the Centres with larger registered voters on the register have been split into at least two Centres to facilitate the voting process.
Our Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Nicholas Osei-Wusu, reports that one such Constituency split into two is Subin in Kumasi which has Centres ‘A’ and ‘B’ all being hosted at the Canteen of the Ashanti Central Police headquarters.
The two Centres have a total of 1,380 eligible voters split into 690 each.
As at 7:40 am, Centre ‘A’ had had 52 persons voting while 30 had done so at Centre ‘B’ without any let or hindrance.
As has almost always characterised such elections, the two main parties, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the largest opposition, National Democratic Congress, NDC have their Agents around closely monitoring proceedings, with only an Independent Parliamentary Candidate for the Constituency, J. B. Danquah, also observing the process.
They all told GBC News that the process so far has been satisfactory and hoped it would be so till the close of polls at 5 pm.
Among those in the relatively long queues waiting for their respective turns to cast their ballots are personnel from the Ghana Police, Ghana Fire, and Ghana Prisons Service, plus their colleagues from the Ghana Armed Forces as well as some civilian staff of these services.
So far, only the NPP’ Parliamentary Candidate for Subin, Kofi Obiti Yeboah, has visited the Centre to familiarise with the processes.
