The Electoral Commission (EC) has trained 41 officials of the commission in Tamale, the Northern Regional capital as part of plans to ensure a transparent election in the forthcoming 2020 general elections.
The new officers were taught how elections are conducted, the creating of polls, electoral laws and regulating as well as the role of electoral officers. Other topics included political party roles, polling station, organisation, ethics, and conduct of various voters, representation of party agents, local and international observers group among others.
The training was organised by the commission in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Association of African Election Authorities AAEA.
The Acting Northern Regional Director of Electoral Commission, Lucas Yelyire, said the training was necessary because the new officers need such trainings to enable them it to discharge their duties efficiently.
The new recruited officers according to Mr. Yelyire are expected to head districts as well as assist senior officers in the discharge of their duties. The Northern Region training was organised simultaneously in Eastern, Northern and Ashanti regions.
He said the EC is mandated by the 1992 constitution of Ghana to ensure that the country’s election system is credible. Mr Yelyire said Ghana’s Electoral process has been described as one of the best on the continent and will do everything possible to sustain these credentials of the Commission.
