Three (3) members of the Economic Fighters League have been arrested by Parliament police for screaming “drop that chamber” from the public gallery in protest of the controversial chamber during proceedings.
The three people arrested included the Convener of the group, Ernesto Yeboah Yeboah, Abeiku Adams and a third who is yet to be identified.
They started chanting after the New Patriotic Party, (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa constituency in the Ashanti region, K.T Hammond has justified the controversial chamber plan insisting ‘MPs’ cannot sit under trees’.
KT Hammond made the comment during a discussion in parliament on the proposed new chamber project.
The discussion began after North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa asked the Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu when the House will be briefed on the new parliament complex.
“The Majority Leader had just read the Business statement for next week which did not contain any agenda on the unpopular plan to build a 450-seater parliament.”
K.T Hammond’s comment stirred the protesters seated in the public gallery who then began chanting ‘drop that chamber’.
Security personnel moved in to remove them. They have been detained at the parliament police station. Ernesto Yeboah who leads the far left political group called Ghana’s democracy, “flawed”.
He called on the youth to “rise up” against a political system that prioritises the comfort of the privileged class.
