The Minister for Transport, Kwaku Asiamah escaped narrowly from being referred to the Privileges Committee of Parliament for contempt. The Minister was scheduled to appear before the House to respond to some nine questions filed by some MPs.
However, a letter to the House which was received just when the House was about to begin sitting on June 21, 2022 and signed by the Acting Chief Director at the Ministry said, the Minister was unavoidably absent and could not appear before the House.
It requested that the questions be rescheduled to Thursday, June 23, 2022. However, relying on constitutional provisions and the standing orders of Parliament, the Speaker said the conduct of the Minister by not appearing before the House was tantamount to contempt.
The Speaker said but for the fact that the Minister was known to be punctual in the past, he would have referred him to the Privileges Committee.
