The University Teachers Association of Ghana, UTAG, has repeated demands for the removal of the current Chairman and Vice Chancellor of the University of Education after EOCO’s exoneration of the former Vice Chancellor Professor Mawutor Avoke.
Speaking on GBC’s Current Affairs Programme, ‘Behind The News’, Member of UTAG’s Executive Committee, Dr. Harry Agbanu, accused the council of UEW of preventing the release of the report vindicating Professor Avoke.
Meanwhile, the lawyer for dismissed Former Vice chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, Harold Atuguba says the exoneration of his client, Professor Mawutor Avoke, by the EOCO is a vindication that allegations levelled against him leading to his dismissal was without merit.
The former Vice Chancellor and four other officials were dismissed last year, prompting an EOCO probe.
Conclusions of the EOCO report is said to have exonerated the former Vice Chancellor on a number of allegations levelled against him. The report found among other things, that Prof Mawutor Avoke did not abuse his office nor breach procurement laws.
Allegations that the mode of selection of one Paa Badu Construction Limited and C-Deck limited for the award of contracts by the University did not follow procurement rules were untrue. It also said allegations that the university failed to use the competitive tendering process to purchase eight pickups at ¢800,000 cannot be substantiated, describing it as “merely speculative.
Speaking on GBC’s ‘Behind The News’, Harold Atuguba said the team will pursue the case in court to ensure an official pronouncement on it for posterity.
In a related development, Public Relations Officer of the University of Education Winneba, Ernest Azutigah says the University is yet to receive any report from the Economic and Organised Crime Office, EOCO.
He however refuted claims that the University dragged Professor Avoke to court, indicating that he was dismissed based on findings by a fact finding committee.
